Birthday Girl

My little Poppy turned 6 today. Since winter is not officially over, I managed to make and finish a poncho and matching scarf for her. Since she was totally besotted by the purple buttons, her poncho and scarf had to match :

Ma petite Poppy a eu 6 ans aujourd'hui.

Here is my little Poppy posing with her new poncho and scarf.

What happened is that I didn't have a single piece of purple fleece long enough to make the scarf. I therefore cut 3 pieces which I sew together to have the correct length of fabric. Since I didn't want the seams to show, I ended up using the lilac cotton fabric as the top fabric instead of the usual other way round.

Lemon Box

A few months ago, I bought this little wooden box in an op shop. I had been drawn to it by the lovely lemons on the lid.

The box itself was painted in a dull sage green, not that sage green is ugly, it's just that in my eyes sage green didn't match the green of the lemon leaves or even the yellow of the lemons. I could see the opportunity to revamp it ! After sanding it lightly, I painted it with a dark green, followed by a bright yellow. I then wet sanded it with a very fine sand paper, only to show lightly the green underneath. This little box was then sealed with a water-based polyurethane hard varnish.

Wooden Coat Hangers - I Did It Again !

I was given some more coat hangers to paint. I just love them. The first coat hanger was painted in orange. The quality of the paint was very poor and it just wasn't opaque enough. I wasn't happy with it. Since I don't like to waste and couldn't be bothered to sand it down, I decided to add a coat of crackle medium. Once dry, I added a coat of sky blue and I do enjoy the end product. The second coat hanger was painted with the wrong shade of green. Again, I didn't want to sand it down so I added some crackle medium then a coat of pink. It looks so much better. The third coat hanger was painted with two coats of lime yellow. Again, it was a poor quality paint and I just didn't like the look of it ... (What's wrong with all those colours ?) I then added a thick coat of orange yellow. Once dry, I lightly wet sanded the coat hanger with a 600grit sanding paper. What do you reckon ? The last coat hanger got two coats of sky blue. With a cotton bud, I added some white dots. They were all finished with a clear coat of varnish.

On m'a donne de nouveaux porte-manteaux a peindre.

Floral Ruffle Cushion

I have been asked to make a ruffle cushion to match an ottoman I had upholstered a few weeks ago. Making a cushion cover was totally new to me, so was the ruffle part of it ! Anyway, I found an interesting video that explains very clearly how to add a ruffle to a cushion. Click here to see it.

After doing some research on the net, I found out that to work out the length of the ruffle strip, it is acceptable to add all the edges of the pillow and multiply that measurement times 1.5 for thick fabrics or times 2 for thinner fabrics. With an edge measuring 40cm, I would need 320cm of fabric for the ruffle. I actually used 220cm of thin fabric for it. The ruffle strip was 13cm wide before sewing. Check out the result :

Upholstery Fabrics

Today I decided it was time I treated myself and bought some fabric. I like florals and anything that is shabby chic. I went for these :

They will soon be used to dress the following chair skeletons :

Poncho and Scarf

I recently borrowed from the local library a book by Emma Hardy called Making Children's Clothes and I have to be honest, every project is a delight for the eyes ! I would love to try them all but decided to start small with the poncho and the scarf. I made the red one for my niece's birthday.

The snowflake buttons were specifically made to order.

The purple one I made for my little Bibi in an attempt to get her warmly covered during the winter as I am struggling to get her to put a jacket on when she decides to go outside to play.

Despite purple being her favourite colour at the moment, it happens that I haven't managed yet to get her to wear the poncho !

At last, I managed to upholster my second ottoman. It was more hard work this time as the fabric would not fold the way I was expecting. I actually had to ask a friend who is an upholsterer to give me a hand, which he gladly did. I got so many tips from him about how to reupholster in general, I am so grateful he took the time to explain to me the various steps. This time, I chose a toile de Jouy called "Pastorale" from Manufacture Francaise des Tissus d'Ameublement (MFTA) :
