Vintage Linen Tea Towel

Since I have a nice collection of vintage linen found in various antique shops, I thought it was high time to start using it. What could I possibly do with it ? I decided to go for a tea towel with an embroidery on it. This tea towel was offered to a very special friend to thank her for being there for me.

Puisque j'ai une belle collection de vieux lin trouve dans divers magasins d'antiquites, je me suis dit qu'il etait temps d'en faire bon usage. Pour en faire quoi ? Je suis donc partie sur un torchon a vaisselle sur lequel j'ai cousu un motif au point de croix. C'est une tres bonne amie qui a recu ce cadeau pour la remercier d'etre la pour moi.

Anonymous Quote, really ?

I was gifted this table a while ago. It was all painted black. I sanded it as much as I could. The top had stains so I decided to do something I had never done before, which was to leave the legs unpainted and actually paint the top in a bid to hide the damage. I chose a cream colour as this is all I had in stock by then. I must have used 2-3 coats of paint. To my horror, within a few days, some wood stains started to appear on the surface of the table ! I had never used a wood primer before back then as I didn't even know what it was and since I had no paint left, I decided to cheat. With a natural sponge, I stamped the top with white paint and gold paint in a bid to hide those stains and ... it worked !

Cette table m'a ete donnee il y a un moment deja. Elle etait peinte en noir. Je l'ai poncee du mieux que j'ai pu. Le dessus de la table avait des taches alors j'ai decide d'experimenter, ce qui consistait de laisser les pieds dans leur couleur naturelle et de peindre le dessus dans le but d'en cacher les defauts. J'ai applique 2-3 couches d'une peinture crème, la seule peinture que j'avais en stock a l'epoque. En l'espace de quelques jours, je decouvris avec horreur que des taches commencaient a apparaitre sur la surface de la table ! Je n'avais pas utilise de sous-couche car, a ce moment-la, je n'en connaissais pas l'existence et comme je n'avais plus de cette peinture crème, j'ai decide de tricher. A l'aide d'une eponge naturelle, j'ai parseme la surface de la table de peinture blanche et or dans le but de cacher les taches et ... cela a marche !

Then I decided to add a rose bud and a quote. There is a story about this quote. I had found it 20 years ago in a gossip magazine. It said the quote was anonymous. I loved it so much that I had always kept a copy of it. Not so long ago, when I decided to add it on the top of the table, I checked online to see if there was an equivalent for it in English and what I found stunned me ... The quote actually exists in English and reads "My being was as an unfinished statue. Love chiselled me: I became a Woman." Except that the true translation was "My being was as an unfinished statue. Love chiselled me: I became a man." because it is borrowed from a book called The Secrets of the Self by Muhammad Iqbal !

J'ai decide d'ajouter un bouton de rose et une citation. Il y a une histoire derriere cette citation. Je l'avais trouvee dans un magazine people il y a 20 ans. Il etait dit que cette citation etait anonyme. Je la trouvais tellement belle que j'en ai garde une copie. Il n'y a pas si longtemps, lorsque j'ai decide de l'afficher sur le dessus de la table, j'ai verifie en ligne s'il en existait une traduction en anglais. Oui ! Sauf qu'il etait question d'un homme car cette citation est en fait tiree d'un livre ecrit par Mohammad Iqbal intitule The Secrets of the Self.

Cross Stitching - The Rooster

I realize it's been a very long time since I last published a post. The truth is, I have been very busy, doing up furniture but not updating this blog about it, looking after my children, shifting house, figuring out where my journey in life was taking me ... In saying that, last year, I opened up my box of embroidery threads and oh, miracle, I got started with small cross stitch projects. I cannot remember the last time I had done some cross stitching prior to this, but believe me, I had forgotten what a nice feeling it is ! To this day, the highlight of my works has to be this magnificent rooster, a pattern from Lanarte. I have sewn this rooster on a cotton drawstring bag that will be heading to France soon as a thank you gift to my dear aunt Marguerite for always having a thought for me. I need to clarify that my aunt Marguerite is a collector of chooks. No need to say I felt she had to have this chook box too !

Je me rends compte que cela fait un moment que je n'ai pas publie de post. Pour etre franche, j'ai ete pas mal occupee entre la renovation des meubles, mes enfants, le demenagement, et aussi le cheminement de ma vie et l'allure que cela prend ... Cela dit, l'annee derniere, j'ai ouvert la boite dans laquelle je garde mes fils de broderie et oh, le miracle, j'ai commence a faire des petits projets au point de croix. Je ne me souviens pas de la derniere fois que j'ai fait du point de croix, mais croyez-moi, j'avais oublie a quel point c'est agreable ! Ce magnifique coq, un motif de Lanarte, est mon ouvrage prefere a ce jour. Il a ete cousu sur un sac a cordelettes en coton en partance pour la France en guise de remerciement a ma tante Marguerite pour avoir toujours une petite pensee pour moi. Il est important de savoir que ma tante Marguerite collectionne les poules. Inutile d'ajouter qu'il va de soi qu'elle ait aussi cette petite boite ornee d'une poule !

Pumpkin Jam Cupboard

Five years ago, while I was flicking through some of Mum's craft magazines, I found an article about a small jam cupboard that had been painted with a beautiful pumpkin by a lady called Francoise Hamon. I thought it was purely beautiful ! I was once given an old pantry cabinet and thought I could get inspiration from this lady by painting my own pumpkin on it. I have kept the original door knobs. Since I don't make jam, I am using it to store my everyday crockery and cotton napkins and tea towels.

Il y a cinq ans, lorsque je feuilletais les magazines de bricolage de Maman, j'ai trouve un article sur un petit confiturier sur lequel Francoise Hamon avait peint une magnifique citrouille. Je l'ai trouve tout simplement admirable ! On m'a donne dans le passé un petit meuble de cuisine. Je me suis dit que je pourrais m'inspirer de cette artiste en y peignant une citrouille dessus. J'ai garde les poignees d'origine. Vu que je ne fais pas de confitures, j'utilise ce petit meuble de cuisine pour y ranger la vaisselle de tous les jours ainsi que les serviettes de table et les torchons a vaisselle en coton.

Footstool and old tapestries ...

As I have said in an earlier post, I am the Queen of Procrastination. I am really good at starting a project, lots of them actually, and never finish them ! But sometimes, I do end up finishing some of them. Isn't it marvellous ? That old footstool was purchased just about a year ago. It stayed this way until a few weeks ago. Then I decided to slaughter it, well, that's what some people may think of what I do to old furniture ...

Comme je l'avais mentionne dans un post anterieur, je suis imbattable lorsqu'il s'agit de remettre a demain ce que je pourrais faire aujourd'hui. Je suis tres douee pour commencer un projet, plein de projets en fait, et pour ne jamais les terminer ! Parfois, cependant, j'arrive a en terminer certains. N'est-ce pas formidable ? J'ai acquis ce vieux repose-pied il y a juste un an. Il est reste ainsi jusqu'a recemment. Puis j'ai decide de le massacrer, enfin, c'est ce que doivent penser certains gens sur le sort que je reserve aux vieux meubles ...

J'ai enleve la tapisserie pour decouvrir ... une autre tapisserie !

After the usual care of sanding, painting white and varnishing, I added a layer of foam on the wooden base, which I covered with the lilac dancing shoes. Trust me, it's much more comfortable than the bare wooden board on which the tapestries were resting !

Apres la routine d'entretien (poncage, peinture et vernissage), j'ai ajoute une couche de mousse sur la base en bois, que j'ai recouverte de chaussons de danse sur un fond lilas. Croyez-moi, c'est bien plus comfortable que la simple planche de bois sur laquelle reposaient les tapisseries !

My Creative Space - Zip it !

This week, I started sewing classes. I am unable to understand a sewing pattern ... The words and pictures just mean absolutely nothing to me... It's a bit sad, I know ! I learn by watching and doing. For my first class, I asked my tutor to show me how to use a zipper. Never thought it could be so simple ! It changed my life ! I am going to make loads of cushion covers now !

Cette semaine, j'ai commence a prendre des cours de couture. Je suis incapable de comprendre un patron ... Les explications et les schemas ne veulent absolument rien dire pour moi ... C'est bien triste, je sais ! J'apprends en regardant et en copiant. Lors de mon premier cours, j'ai demande a ma prof de me montrer comment poser une fermeture-eclair. Jamais je n'aurai pense que c'etait aussi simple ! Cela a change ma vie ! Je vais maintenant pouvoir faire plein de housses de coussin !
