My Creative Space - Little Princess Drawstring Bag

I don't like to waste. I tend to keep fabric scraps as I believe I may need them one day for a small project. Yesterday, I went to visit some friends and brought them some home-made almond and pear tartlets to thank them for helping me in my vegie patch. I had also made a little drawstring bag as an extra gift just because I couldn't help it ! Knowing that my friend's favourite colours are red and green, I came up with this little princess, using some fabric scraps from a Christmas fabric showing poinsettia and mistletoe berries.

Je n'aime pas le gaspillage. J'ai tendance a garder les petites chutes de tissu car je suis persuadee qu'un jour, j'en aurai besoin pour un petit projet. Hier, je suis allee rendre visite a des amis. Je leur avais apporte des tartelettes poire-amande fait maison pour les remercier de m'avoir aide dans mon jardin potager. J'avais egalement confectionne un petit sac de rangement avec cordelettes, simplement parce que je n'ai pas pu m'en empecher ! Sachant que les couleurs preferees de mon amie sont le rouge et le vert, j'en suis venue a realiser une petite princesse a l'aide de chutes d'un tissu de noel montrant des poinsettias et du gui.

Black and White Drawers

A few months ago, while op shopping, I spotted what I believed was such cute wooden drawers. When I asked the manager how much it was, she told me it was not for sale. Why was it in the shop then ? Just too good to let go ... I went back to her, asked again, told her how challenging it was to find good decent solid wood furniture, how I had fallen in love with the design of it, how desperate I was to find good drawers for my daughters' clothes ... I litterally begged her to reconsider (I so wanted to get those drawers !!!) and she eventually gave in ! Why so much interest in them ? They were missing the mirror part of it and a knob, they were covered with stickers, not such a good sight, don't you think ? I saw the potential in them still.

Il y a quelques mois, alors que je faisais les magasins d'occasion, j'avais repere ce que je pensais etre une jolie commode en bois. Apres avoir demande combien coutait la commode a la responsable du magasin, elle me repondit qu'elle n'etait pas a vendre. Pourquoi etait-elle dans le magasin alors ? Cette commode etait trop belle pour manquer une opportunite ... Je suis retournee voir la responsable et je lui ai a nouveau demande. Je lui ai dit que c'etait difficile de trouver des meubles en bois de bonne qualite, que j'etais tombee sous le charme de cette commode, que je cherchais en vain une commode pour y ranger les vetements de mes filles ... Je suis allee jusqu'a la supplier d'y reflechir a nouveau (je voulais tellement avoir cette commode !!!) et puis elle a cede ! Pourquoi tant d'interet pour cette commode ? Il y manquait le miroir, ainsi qu'une poignee, elle etait couverte d'auto-collants, pas vraiment belle a voir, qu'en pensez-vous ? J'y avais cependant vu du potentiel.

After numerous coats of white paint, I left them the way they were for a few weeks. Until I would find time and inspiration to finish them. Then last week-end, I got started. I used three of the drawers to glue and varnish a nice black and white decoupage paper with French writing and French patterns on it. I added some porcelain knobs which I got from another chest of drawers I have since bought but which was missing a few knobs by the way.

Apres de nombreuses couches de peinture blanche, j'ai laisse la commode telle qu'elle etait pendant plusieurs semaines. Jusqu'a ce que je trouve le temps et l'inspiration pour la terminer. Et puis le week-end dernier, je m'y suis mise. J'ai colle et vernis sur trois des tiroirs un papier a decoupage avec un message et des motifs francais. J'ai ajoute des poignees en porcelaine que j'avais recuperees sur une autre commode achetee entre-temps, une commode dont il manquait des poignees au passage.

Then I finished the other drawers with matching polka dots and stripes as I thought it would probably look more appealing and more esthetic to the eye if there was not decoupage paper all over the place. Well, there is an interesting anecdote about this part of the job ... I had used black paint leftover I had. The paint was not waterproof ... So when I started to varnish the drawers, the paint started to run !!! Not a good sight at all ... So after sanding the drawers down to the wood and painting them with so many coats of white, I ran to the DIY shop and got some decent black paint. By the way, who would have thought they had so many shades of black ?

Puis j'ai termine les autres tiroirs avec des points et des rayures coordonnees puisque je pensais que ce serait plus attrayant et plus agreable au regard qu'un trop plein de papier a decoupage. Et c'est la que ca devient interessant ... J'avais utilise un reste de peinture noire. La peinture n'etait pas impermeable ... Donc quand j'ai commence a vernir les tiroirs, la peinture a commence a deteindre !!! Pas joli a voir du tout ... Du coup, apres avoir ponce a nouveau les tiroirs et les avoir repeint avec moultes couches de peinture blanche, j'ai couru au magasin de bricolage pour acheter de la peinture noire decente. Au passage, qui eut cru que l'on pouvait avoir autant de nuances de noir ?

My Creative Space - T-Lites

I like to upcycle, mostly because the items that were produced at that time are durable and made with a quality that we can hardly find nowadays. I like glass but glass can be plain. I turned those simple small glasses into t-lites by glueing a strip of floral cotton fabric.

J'aime donner un second souffle aux objets, principalement parce que les objets produits dans le temps sont durables et ont une qualite qu'on ne retrouve pas dans les objets manufactures aujourd'hui. J'aime le verre, mais le verre peut etre quelconque. J'ai colle une bande de tissu floral en coton sur ces petits verres tout simple pour les transformer en bougeoirs.

The other ones, I handpainted them then I baked them for the colour to become permanent.

Les autres, je les ai peint a la main et je les ai cuit au four pour fixer la couleur.

My Creative Space - Gingham Drawers

Believe it or not, I like to have a tidy house ... My craft corner hasn't been reflecting this recently ...

Vous me croirez si vous voulez mais j'aime que ma maison soit bien rangee ... Mon coin-bricolage n'en montrait rien ces derniers temps ...

No matter how much I like this hutch dresser, it was just taking too much space and I had to let it go. I have been given by a freecycle member some drawers a while ago. I like the fact they are made of pine. However those drawers could hardly hold together. Yet I thought it was high time to give them an extreme makeover.

Peu importe a quel point j'aime ce vaisselier, il prenait bien trop de place et il etait temps de passer a autre chose. Un membre freecycle m'avait donne une commode il y a quelques temps. J'aime le fait qu'elle soit en pin. Cependant, la commode tenait tout juste debout. Malgre tout, je me suis dit qu'il etait grand temps de la renover.

I asked a friend cabinet maker to replace the bottom of the drawers and the back of the furniture. He actually reinforced the frame by adding screws all over the place too. I should actually be grateful for that when I think about it ! After I removed the handles, I filled some of the holes with some builder's fill and sanded the whole lot. I replaced the handles with wooden knobs. A few coats of white paint later, I decided to experiment and with a lot of low-tack tape, I created a gingham pattern on the drawers. I finished my project with a coat of water-based varnish. I do like the bright colours that lift up the living room and of course, my craft tools are all nicely tucked away in the drawers now.

J'ai demande a un ami menuisier de remplacer le fond des tiroirs et le dos du meuble. En fait, il a aussi renforce la structure en ajoutant des vis un peu partout. Je devrai lui en etre reconnaissante quand j'y pense ! Apres avoir enleve les poignees, j'ai bouche plusieurs trous avec une pate speciale puis j'ai ponce le tout. J'ai remplace les poignees par des boutons en bois. Quelques couches de peinture blanche plus tard, et avec beaucoup de ruban a faible adhesion, j'ai choisi d'experimenter sur le meuble en creant un motif vichy. J'ai termine ce projet avec une couche de vernis aqueux. J'apprecie ces couleurs vives qui egayent la salle de sejour et bien sur, mes outils de bricolage sont maintenant tous bien ranges dans les tiroirs.
