Birthday Girl

My little Poppy turned 6 today. Since winter is not officially over, I managed to make and finish a poncho and matching scarf for her. Since she was totally besotted by the purple buttons, her poncho and scarf had to match :

Ma petite Poppy a eu 6 ans aujourd'hui. Puisque nous sommes officiellement toujours en hiver, j'ai reussi a terminer un poncho et une echarpe assortie en guise de cadeau d'anniversaire. Comme elle adore les petits boutons violet, il fallait que le poncho et l'echarpe soient coordonnes :

What happened is that I didn't have a single piece of purple fleece long enough to make the scarf. I therefore cut 3 pieces which I sew together to have the correct length of fabric. Since I didn't want the seams to show, I ended up using the lilac cotton fabric as the top fabric instead of the usual other way round.

Puisque je n'avais pas un morceau de polaire violet suffisamment long pour confectionner l'echarpe, j'ai cousu 3 morceaux ensemble pour obtenir la longueur desiree. Comme je ne souhaitais pas que les coutures se voient, j'ai inverse les tissus pour que le coton lilas soit sur le dessus.

 



Lemon Box

A few months ago, I bought this little wooden box in an op shop. I had been drawn to it by the lovely lemons on the lid.

Il y a quelques mois, j'avais achete une petite boite en bois dans un magasin d'occasion. Ce sont les citrons sur le couvercle qui avaient attire mon attention.

The box itself was painted in a dull sage green, not that sage green is ugly, it's just that in my eyes sage green didn't match the green of the lemon leaves or even the yellow of the lemons. I could see the opportunity to revamp it ! After sanding it lightly, I painted it with a dark green, followed by a bright yellow. I then wet sanded it with a very fine sand paper, only to show lightly the green underneath. This little box was then sealed with a water-based polyurethane hard varnish.

La boite avait ete peinte d'un vert sauge terne, non pas que cette couleur soit moche, c'est juste que vu de ma fenetre, cette couleur n'allait pas avec le vert des feuilles ou meme avec le jaune des citrons. J'avais repere l'occasion de la mettre en valeur ! Apres l'avoir legerement poncee, je l'ai peinte avec un vert sapin, suivie d'une couche d'un jaune eclatant. Je l'ai ensuite poncee avec de l'eau et du papier de verre tres fin, histoire de faire apparaitre ici et la le vert qui se trouvait en-dessous. J'ai ensuite recouvert la boite d'une couche de vernis polyurethane aqueux.

Wooden Coat Hangers - I Did It Again !

I was given some more coat hangers to paint. I just love them. The first coat hanger was painted in orange. The quality of the paint was very poor and it just wasn't opaque enough. I wasn't happy with it. Since I don't like to waste and couldn't be bothered to sand it down, I decided to add a coat of crackle medium. Once dry, I added a coat of sky blue and I do enjoy the end product. The second coat hanger was painted with the wrong shade of green. Again, I didn't want to sand it down so I added some crackle medium then a coat of pink. It looks so much better. The third coat hanger was painted with two coats of lime yellow. Again, it was a poor quality paint and I just didn't like the look of it ... (What's wrong with all those colours ?) I then added a thick coat of orange yellow. Once dry, I lightly wet sanded the coat hanger with a 600grit sanding paper. What do you reckon ? The last coat hanger got two coats of sky blue. With a cotton bud, I added some white dots. They were all finished with a clear coat of varnish.

On m'a donne de nouveaux porte-manteaux a peindre. Je les adore. J'ai peint le premier porte-manteau en orange. La peinture etait de mediocre qualite et manquait d'opacite. Je n'etais pas satisfaite. Comme je n'aime pas gaspiller et n'avais pas le courage de reponcer, j'ai decide d'ajouter une couche de vernis a craqueler. Une fois sec, j'ai ajoute une couche de contraste bleu ciel. J'avoue aimer le resultat. Pour le deuxieme porte-manteau, je n'avais pas utilise le bon vert. La encore, je ne voulais pas reponcer, alors j'ai ajoute une couche de vernis a craqueler puis une couche de rose. C'est tellement plus joli. Le troisieme porte-manteau a ete peint avec deux couches de jaune citron. C'etait la aussi une peinture de qualite mediocre et je n'aimais pas ce que cela donnait... (Qu'est-ce qu'elles ont toutes ces couleurs ?) J'ai ensuite ajoute une couche epaisse de jaune d'oeuf. Une fois la peinture seche, j'ai legerement ponce avec un papier de verre grain 600 et de l'eau. Qu'en pensez-vous ? J'ai peint le dernier porte-manteau avec deux couches de bleu ciel. A l'aide d'un coton-tige, j'ai ajoute des points blancs. J'ai termine les porte-manteaux avec une couche de vernis transparent.
